By now you have heard about 2nd hand smoke and know very well that its not simply to have a cigarette in each hand but what about 3rd hand smoke? This is no joke there is such a thing as 3rd hand smoke and it is coming from serious research done at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. The term was coined to describe the toxins that remain in a room even after a cigarette has been extinguished. The chemicals such as hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, arsenic, lead, and chromium canlinger in carpets, sofas and clothing–and they’re particularly harmful to children, researchers say.
The Massachusetts team is receiving plenty of kudos for its work, which provides even more incentive for smokers to quit.
The study is the first piece of research to suggest that our health could be at risk just by entering a room in which a cigarette was smoked. Particulates from cigarette smoke can remain on clothing, furniture and hair, long after the smoking has stopped, according to the study’s authors.
When the smoke clears
Third-hand smoke could have far reaching implications from a public policy perspective.
The province of Ontario has now made it illegal to smoke in your car if you are accompanied by children under the age of 16, assuming that 17 and older is old enough for the kid to stand-up to a smoker parent, although that can be debated. Any infraction to this provincial law will result in a $250 fine. (Ironically the exact amount of my Smoking Cessation plan from my Hull location talk about money better spent!) Now with what we know about 3rd hand smoke, it would become important to look into the benefits of banning smoking in cars altogether as children sitting in a car where a parent normally smoke are in as much risk as if a parent was already smoking. For example, could smokers be prohibited from taking smoking breaks at work, so that they’re not bringing third-hand smoke back to the office?
It’s unclear what policy adjustments governments will make as a result of the recent study. But a few provinces have already started to ban smoking in cars with children, and this may just be the tip of the iceberg, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Rob Cunningham, the Cancer Society’s senior policy analyst, says more restrictions on public smoking could be on the way, given the findings about third-hand smoke.
Heather Crowe, the waitress who became the poster-girl for second-hand smoke in Canada, single-handedly helped win the fight for the right to work in a clean-air environment. So far, there is no counterpart on the third-hand smoke issue, but it could just be a matter of time.
I truly think that we are looking atan eventual ban of smoking but when will that be? 50 to 100 years from now? Maybe never... till then we have to know that as the smoker's money goes up in smoke we all have to be mindful of where its dangerous toxins go and know that once the smoke seems to clear its components simply fall back down onto what ever lies beneath, carpets, sofas, your child.

Great article Dan,
I always wonder, why parents poisening their children subconciously.
Greetings from Germany
Andresa
It is puzzling! Since there is always good intentions I would say that they simply don't know or understand that it can arm the kids even if they smoke only when the kids are not in the car. Cause I doubt they would do it on purpose!
Thank you ever so much for reading!
Come back soon!
